Maidenhead United FC Ladies have got off to a flying start since they formed in the summer.
The Southern Regional League Division 1 side won their first eight competitive matches - and can count themselves a little unfortunate as they lost 1-0 against Swindon Town Ladies in the FA Womens Cup first round on Sunday.
After some narrow wins, Maidenhead were in superb form and over the next five games they averaged seven goals a game, with former Woking striker Verity Snow scoring 13 goals in just five appearances.
Maidenhead Ladies play at one of the best grounds in the women’s football pyramid, with Maidenhead United’s York Road considered to be one of the best playing surfaces in the Blue Square South League. And Maidenhead have been boosted by the appointment of Fulham FC Ladies striker Sarah Lipscombe as a coach.
Half of last season’s Burnham Ladies first team make up Maidenhead United Ladies, with other players signing from Woking, Barnet, Reading Royals, Bracknell and Maidenhead United’s own junior girls set-up.
Another ex Reading Royal involved is Maidenhead’s first team manager Ryan Salmon. Maidenhead United Ladies already have more than 50 members on their new Facebook group - and they even have an international fan club, run from Norway.
They have enjoyed some good crowds at York Road, with around 80 spectators attending Sunday’s FA Womens Cup first round tie with Swindon, and more than 70 attending the 7-3 win against Tetbury in the previous round – which beat the attendance at nearby Bracknell Town’s first team men’s match the previous day!
Mark Roach, Maidenhead United Football Club’s full time commercial and community manager, and Maidenhead United FC Ladies’ press officer, said: “Maidenhead United decided to start a Ladies team last season - and we were delighted that Reading FC Women sent a team to play us in the team’s first ever friendly at York Road in the summer.”
That game saw around 100 fans turn out to watch Maidenhead’s historic first ever Ladies game at York Road – the world’s oldest continually used football ground.
“It has been a huge success story. We were very keen as a club that Maidenhead United Ladies should play on our pitch at York Road and in the same kit as the men, so that they are a true Maidenhead United team, and we are very proud of the way they have started the season.
“Club secretary Lisa Starling, director of football Mike Stevens and manager Ryan Salmon have done a fantastic job. And it is a big coup that Sarah Lipscombe is assisting with coaching.
“It just goes to show how far the girls have come in such a short space of time that they were so disappointed to lose against Swindon in the first round of the FA Womens Cup. They really thought they could win the game, and were very unlucky to lose.
“They are still in all the other cup competitions they have entered and are already looking like they will be challenging for promotion, which for a team who were only formed a few months ago is a great result.”
Maidenhead United Ladies are on the lookout for new players. For more information contact Lisa Starling on 07738 985159.
